The Teen Years: Setting Limitlessness
The teen years loom like a bad weather report, the unfair payoff for all your love and dedication. The job of protecting your child never seems more difficult. The scary yet exciting thing is that your child will start to spread his own wings and find his own way in the world.
A Call for Gentleness
The greatest source of danger to our human lives is, unfortunately, other humans. Our human species is unique in its ability to attack, decimate, maim and destroy itself. It requires little effort for us to kill one another or ourselves.
Living With a Moody Kid
It's extremely rare for a preschooler to be clinically depressed, unless something seriously traumatic has happened. Some children are simply vulnerable to getting bumped into a bad mood, and it's harder than one would like for them to climb back out of their slumps. This is very normal; lots of other kids have similar tendencies.
Your Child’s First Dentist Visit
First visits to the dentist can set up life-long fears and anxieties — or they can be a normal part of life. When I was a kid, we didn’t start going to the dentist until we had our adult teeth. Nowadays, dentist recommend having the first visit around age three for kids whose teeth seem healthy.
Cardboard Box Halloween Costumes
Some adorable costumes have come to light using little more than a cardboard box, some paint and lots of imagination. Here are several ideas to choose from. Happy Halloween!
Living with Differences
In the first week at my daughter's inclusive preschool (half kids with special needs, half "typical" kids), the parents tried to figure out who had the disabled kids and who didn't. No one knew how to begin a conversation — we were afraid of offending each other. We found our common ground: we were all parents raising preschoolers. Some of us had children who loved music, couldn't use the bathroom yet or screamed when someone got too close. And some of us had kids with disabilities.
Help Your Child Cherish Early Memories
To provide your children with the most memories of their own past, you should discuss past events with them often. This may help your child feel that reminiscing about the past is a valuable activity. In addition, when you do, you should use a style both high in structure and autonomy support. If you use a style low on both of these, then your child will be less likely to remember the event.
I have a boy and a girl, and they’re different! Should I treat them the same?
It’s not always easy to know how handle gender issues with your kids. Here are a few guidelines for you.
Thrill Your Little Girl with a Princess Birthday Party
Kids' birthday parties seem to have gotten a little out of hand these days. The only parties some children have ever attended have been at places like McDonald's or Burger King! However, with a little planning, you can throw a great party in your own home for a lot less money. A princess theme might be just the thing for your little girl. What little girl doesn't dream of being a princess? Here are some ideas to help you plan a princess party on a budget.
That Glorious Gap-Toothed Smile
Never have I seen a child so excited to lose a tooth as my second-born son. It was one of the biggest signs of becoming a big kid to date and coincided with his learning how to whistle and finishing his first chapter book in the same weekend. Finally, he was a big boy! Now he wouldn’t be the only one in class who hadn’t lost a tooth. When the first tooth wiggled just a little, we warned him not to push on it too much. He was on top of the world— that is, until he couldn’t chew without his top tooth colliding with the bottom, causing him pain. He cried about the pain and the annoyance on and off for a few hours before the tooth finally plunked out and hit the floor.
Everything About Birthstones
As a new parent or an old pro, there’s something wonderful about the birthstone. What does it mean? What can we find with our birthstone on it? Even children love to learn about their birthstones and receive special gifts.
