This goose is cooked
Remember the US Airways flight that encountered a flock of geese at LaGuardia Airport, skidded down the runway and landed in the Hudson River? Ever since 2009 after that terrible accident, New York City officials have been trying to figure out what to do with the dangerous, ever increasing flocks of geese in the area. They have come up with an answer: feed the poor.
That’s right. While the idea didn’t take flight in New York, it did land in Pennsylvania. The flocks of geese that threaten commercial flights will be rounded up, killed and shipped to Pennsylvania’s shelters where they will be cooked and served to the poor and needy. “Rather than disposing of them in landfills, we wanted to make sure they do not go to waste,” said a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) spokesperson.
Mass culls to clear the area of geese were approved in NYC after the National Transportation Safety Board positively identified the remains of the Canada geese in the engine of the US Airways plane. To institute this plan, the city will pay for the capture and transport of the geese. They will be distributed to various food banks in Pennsylvania.
After no suitable locations were found in New York, Pennsylvania stepped forward and agreed to take the birds once they are captured. Right now, officials are scanning the area looking for large flocks. Last summer, an effort was made to collect and gas the geese. Outcries from the public led to the new plan.
