Morning after pill gaining in usage
Since the morning after pill or Plan B became an over the counter med, it has skyrocketed in popularity. Researchers found that from 2006-2008, usage doubled over the previous four to six years earlier when it was prescription only, according to a new report in Fertility and Sterility.
The progestin pills decrease the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex if the pill is taken within 72 hours of intercourse. After 12 hours, the risk increases by 50%. The hormones stop the release of an egg.
Of 6300 women surveyed between 2006 and 2008, nearly 10% said they had used emergency contraception like Plan B. That compares to 4% in 2002. “It has more than doubled since the last time the data were collected,” said Megan L. Kavanaugh, a senior research associate at the Guttmacher Institute in New York.
Interestingly, they found no increase in the number of conversations women had with their doctors about the availability of the drug. They think there are women who do not know it is easily available and could be using it in emergencies rather than risk unwanted pregnancy.
“I think it’s important that the pubic be aware that, number one, emergency contraception exists, and that it’s available over the counter,” said Kavanaugh. Along with Plan B, there is also a generic choice called Next Choice. A woman must be 17 years or older and have government identification to show proof of age, a driver license or passport. Purchase the meds from a pharmacist directly.
