The Well-Stocked Potting Table

Submitted by Courtney on Thu, 01/28/2010 - 22:48

In my opinion, no garden is complete without a good quality potting table. Potting tables are a particularly great investment for older people or those with back problems (like myself), as you can easily water and weed to your hearts content without much bending and squatting.

Whether your potting table has several different tiers or shelves, drawers, or is made from teak or cedar, there are some essential items that you should certainly consider having at hand.

Watering Can

A watering can is an essential for maintaining all potted plants. Many potted plants require a bit more delicate care than others, so unless you feel like struggling with the house and fidgeting with nozzle attachments every time, consider leaving a watering can out there.

Gardening Gloves

Having a good, sturdy pair of gardening gloves at your potting table is a must! You never know when you may need to pluck a weed or two from your plants’ soil, so save yourself some time by having gardening gloves readily available.

Gardening Tools

Most potting tables come with hooks for you to hang up things such as your 4-pronged cultivator and spade (if yours doesn’t, consider screwing some in for added convenience). Keep some pruning sheers hand too to tame those more wily plants of yours.

Soil & Fertilizer

No one wants to have to drag heavy bags of soil and manure around their garden, nor run back and forth from the shed to fill up small pots. If you cannot keep entire bags of soil and manure on your potting table, try to fill up slightly smaller 5-pound bags of each and store them with your potted plants. This will save you from a LOT of back aches!

NOTE: Be wary of the weight limit of the shelves. Some shelves on potting tables are there simply to hold some light-weight plants and not pounds of heavy material.

Extra Planters and Pots

You never know when they will come in handy! This is a potting bench after all.

Everyone has different needs and preferences when it come to gardening, so above all else try to make your potting table a one-stop-shop for your gardening supplies. Saving you time scrounging around for tools means more time you can spend enjoying the gifts that Mother Nature has given us!
