The Green Carpet: 2006 Environmental Media Awards

Submitted by Courtney on Tue, 01/19/2010 - 13:39

Where am I? I know it’s not Oscar month, nor the Grammies but there’s Adam Levine and Kristin Davis and wait… a green carpet?!

No star studded affair speaks to our Earth as closely as the “green carpeted” Environmental Media Awards (also known as the EMAs). Celebrities like Nicole Richie, Darryl Hannah and Maroon 5 all rolled up to the regal event in hybrids and other fuel efficient cars, notably taking a stand for our planet Earth.

Not sure what the EMAs are? The EMAs is an annual event that has been a forerunner in bringing awareness to the “green” issues we face today. This association was founded in 1989 for the purpose of getting those in the entertainment biz – whether they are actors, producers, writers, and so on – to join them in the global effort to combat the environmental problems we face today. As Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers said about how the media is NOT speaking out enough on environmental issues: “It's very rarely a sexy thing to talk about on the news. But there's always a groundswell of environmental activists that work really hard, and I'm grateful to them for inspiring people like me to be conscious of the earth."

So who was it that walked the EMA “green carpet” and took home an award? The top documentary film of 2006 (this should come as no surprise) was Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth), beating out the two other nominees “Who Killed the Electric Car” and “Too Hot Not to Handle”. “Ice Age: The Meltdown” squeaked in as being the Feature Film winner, just narrowing beating both “Hoot” and “Syriana” for top prize. The other winners for the night were:

EMA Futures Award
Maroon 5
EMA Missions in Music Award:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
TV Episodic Drama:
Boston Legal, "Finding Nimmo"
TV Episodic Comedy:
The Simpsons, "The Bonfire Of The Manatees"
Children's Animated Television:
The Wonder Pets, "Save The Tree"
Children's Live Action Television:
Darcy's Wild Life, "Trash Talk"
Reality Television:
MTV's "Break The Addiction: An Inconvenient Truth"
Turner Award:
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, "Rockabye"

Congratulations to all of the winners (and the nominees) for raising awareness for an excellent cause! Best of luck to your 2007 environmental endeavors.
