Ancient Techniques: Asian Massage Therapy

Submitted by Courtney on Sun, 03/07/2010 - 20:34

Just the word “massage” seems to evoke a deep sigh and a dreamy closing of the eyes. Not only is massage a great way to relax and decompress after a long day, but it also has several health benefits, such as:

  • Reduced or eliminated pain
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved joint mobility
  • Improved immune system
  • Reduced tension
  • Reduced anxiety and depression

Massaging goes much further than having your loved one rub your shoulders or your feet. Certain Asian massages are becoming increasingly popular here in the West as well. We will begin with one of the oldest types of massage.

Nihon Kaifuki Anma

This type of massage is all about physical restoration. Originating in China well over 3000 years ago, when it was introduced to Japan about 1300 years ago several different massage techniques were born from it (such as Swedish and shiatsu). This type of massage is all about working the deep tissues of the body through kneading movements while not using any oils.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu massage is not just one form of massage – but several! It is an ever evolving type of massage that, to date, there are well over 14 recognized forms of shiatsu massage. The word “shiatsu” literally translates in Japanese to “finger pressure”.

Though it is unknown as to how long shiatsu massage has actually been in practice, it was first recognized as a form of massage in 1912 by Tokujiro Namikoshi. Since then, shiatsu massage has evolved into different forms that are used throughout Japan, China, Europe and North America.

Thai Massage

As the name suggests, Thai massage originated in Thailand perhaps even over 2500 years ago by Shivago Komarpaj (he is said to have been Buddha’s physician). Throughout the 1990s, Thai massage has become increasingly popular. This type of massage involves deep massaging and stretching while clients usually lay on the floor. Unlike a lot of the types of massages we are used to today, Thai massage uses no oils. All you need to wear when you go for a Thai massage is loose clothes so your body is free to move.

Discuss the pros and cons of each type of massage with a massage therapist or even your health care practitioner to find which massage technique will best benefit you.
