Four Simple Ways to Make a Difference with Your Dollars

Submitted by Marsha Newsom on Tue, 01/19/2010 - 14:52

With so many issues and problems in the world, it's hard to feel as if there is any way you can make a difference. After all, you have limited time and money to devote to any cause. Rather than set aside money to donate to a cause, you can be a conscientious consumer and spend your money in ways that will make a difference. Here are four simple ways that the dollars you spend on everyday necessities can make a difference in your community and the world.

Support your local economy.

There has been a lot of talk in recent months about the folks on“main street”. These small, locally owned businesses hold the solution to so many of our problems, from job creation to reducing our carbon footprint. More than ever, they depend upon your support. It's greener for our environment and, in the long run, greener for your wallet as these businesses lead our nation back on the road to self sufficiency.

Expand your support to your local bank or credit union.

In the wake of the financial melt down, a grassroots movement has begun to encourage families to move their money into local local financial institutions. (http://moveyourmoney.net) Community banks and credit unions invest in their neighborhoods through small business loans and mortgages.

Buy fairly when choosing imported goods

There are some products, like coffee, chocolate, tea, and sugar, that have to be imported. Make sure the families that grow these products are not being exploited. Buy products with a “fair trade” label. This way you can be assured that the producers are earning a sustainable living.

Help our animal friends

The way we treat animals is a reflection of the humanity of our culture. The companionship our pets provide is proven to enhance our physical and mental well being. However, billions of cats and dogs are abused, neglected and euthanized every year. There are thousands of local animal welfare and rescue societies working to care and find homes for abandoned pets. They are always in need of donations and volunteers. If you are looking for a four-legged addition to your family, choose adoption. Petfinder.com lists animals from shelters across the country.

Travel responsibly

Take the guilt out of your vacation by traveling responsibly. Make sure your choices are good for the environment, as well as for the economy of your host country. Reduce the environmental impact of your travel by taking fewer, longer vacations. When possible, use rail or public transportation.

Support the local economy by staying in a B&B, local hostel or privately owned inn. Shop with local vendors for souvenirs. Learn the local cuisine while supporting family-owned restaurants, grocers, bakeries, and coffee shops. Respect the local culture. You are, after all, a guest in their home country.

It's up to you

You don't have to find extra money in your budget to donate to a cause. By changing your buying habits and being a conscientious consumer, you can make a big difference with the dollars you spend on your everyday needs.
