No one wants to share a home with ants, flies, mosquitoes and other creepy, crawly critters. But is polluting your home with chemical insecticides the solution you want? Which brings us to this question: are there natural remedies that work as well as commercial bug sprays?
Fortunately it's not an “either_____ or______” situation, as in “either” you live with the bugs “or” you live with the chemicals. There are many natural elements that can be used to rid your home of unwelcome visitors.
Plant oils
Plant oils, like the citronella we get from lemon grass, deter mosquitoes and houseflies. Oil from catnip and castor bean plants can be used as a natural insecticide. For a fragrant solution, toss sage or rosemary leaves into your outdoor grill to reply flying insects.
Salt and borax
Simple table salt can rid your home of fleas. Sprinkle liberally in your carpet and let sit for a day or two. It works to dehydrate fleas and their eggs and larvae. Run the vacuum over your carpet and change bags. Used the same way, borax can control fleas, lice, roaches, termites and spiders. Or dilute the borax powder in water and spray on washable surfaces fro the same benefits.
Make your own fly paper
You can make your own fly paper with a mixture of one-quarter cup maple syrup, and one tablespoon each of white and bread sugar. Spread it on strips of cardboard and let soak overnight. Then punch a hole in one end and hang by a string.
Before you surrender to commercial sprays in your fight against pests, try these kitchen cabinet solutions. With just a little effort and ingenuity, you win the battle using natural remedies.
