How to Treat Bipolar Disorder Without Meds
Submitted by Marsha Newsom on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 21:07
Due to the debilitating side effects many individuals suffer from the medications traditionally used to treat bipolar disorders, some have looked to alternative ways to treat and manage the symptoms of the disease. Bipolar disorder is characterized by severe moods swings between phases of mania and depression. Medications are used to “even out” these swings.
Bipolar disorder is a serious condition. Although the following methods are effective for some, a mental health professional should always be consulted for treatment of bipolar disorder.
As a replacement for medication, people are turning to a variety of therapies and alternative treatment plans. Among those that have proven beneficial are psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, early relapse detection, assertiveness training and hypnosis. Some have found results by treating drug and alcohol addictions that can arise from bipolar disorder. Individuals are seeking advice from nutritionists for help in controlling their mood swings through diet and dietary supplements.
Studies have also shown that animal-assisted therapy can be effective for psychiatric patients including those suffering from bipolar order. 1 Other alternative treatments include expressive therapies such as art, dance and music therapy and older, cultural forms of healing arts such as acupuncture, shiatsu, reiki, Ayurveda, yoga, sweat lodges and talking circles. Some patients use relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, biofeedback, guided imagery, and massage therapy to manage their symptoms.
The effectiveness of any therapy varies among individuals. Patients may need medical supervision to wean themselves off of medication. It's advisable to keep your physician informed of your plans to try new treatment options.
