Vacation Safety Tips

Submitted by Courtney on Wed, 03/10/2010 - 21:54

With all of the excitement that surrounds the planning and preparing for a trip, we may forget a few details – like how to make sure our vacation and time away will be a safe and happy one. Put down that travel guide for a moment and be sure that you have taken these following safety measures into account:

Make a First Aid Kit

Never just assume that someone will have a bandage or dressing where ever you go; be sure that you prepare your own travel first aid kit. You can always tailor the kit to suit you and your family’s specific needs (i.e. if someone suffers from travel sickness, include items that will help relieve those symptoms) but there are some things you should always have on hand, such as:

  • Adhesive tape
  • 4x4 sterile gauze pads
  • Antiseptic agent
  • Aspirin
  • Bandages of several different sizes
  • Lighter
  • Latex gloves
  • Phone Card (or quarters)
  • Plastic resealable bags
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers

Know Where you’re Going

Though you may think that where you are going is going to be hot-hot-hot, many hot countries definitely have a rainy season, too! Be sure to check the weather for where you are going and bring appropriate clothing.

Food and drinks are another thing you must look into. Some countries do not have clean, healthy water as we do here in North America and there may be foods that you are allergic to or may cause horrible indigestion if consumed. As a general rule, drink only bottled water and go for foods that have been boiled or peeled if you have a somewhat fickle stomach.

Get Insurance

The chance of someone in your party becoming seriously ill or injured is unlikely, but it can and does happen. Travel insurance is relatively cheap and is well worth it. Be sure to read the fine print fully though and ask any questions you may have, such as:

  • Are there any age restrictions?
  • Can I extend my coverage if need be?
  • How much is actually covered and in what circumstance?

Get Checked Out

A quick visit to the doctor’s office to ensure that you are healthy and good to go is a necessity. You will also be able to discuss unique health issues that may arise while you are at a particular destination. When travelling to many countries, shots like hepatitis B and C are commonly recommended. Even if you are not planning on vaccinating yourself, you being aware of diseases in the area will help you choose natural remedies for any diseases.

Lock Up Tight

While packing for a vacation, we sometimes forget to protect our home properly. Be sure to lock all windows and doors, cancel your mail and/or newspaper delivery while you’re away, and don’t tell the world you’re not going to be there. All you need to do is tell a neighbor and perhaps have someone stop by the home every couple of days while you’re away to be sure that everything’s fine.
