How Do I Avoid All This Glop in My Skin Care Products?

Submitted by Marsha Newsom on Sun, 01/24/2010 - 21:17

With chemical additives invading every corner of our life, parabens add one more level of concern. Widely used as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, parabens mimic the hormone estrogen. This has led to concerns about a connection between breast cancer in women and reproductive development in men. With studies on both sides of the issue, regulators have not yet banned the substance. However cautious consumers are on the watch for paraben free skin car products.

Breast Cancer Action (BCA) recommends checking labels before buying any products.1 If you are still unsure, then call or email the company's customer service department. BCA has compiled a list of "paraben free cosmetic companies" on their website.

Another alternative is to make your own moisturizes, lotions, and cleansers. Many, such as this oatmeal scrub, can be made with ingredients from your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • Homemade Oatmeal Scrub
  • ¼ cup Oatmeal
  • 2-3 teaspoons of witch hazel
  • Water as needed

Directions

Make a paste by adding drops of water dampen oatmeal. The add witch hazel. Apply to face using upward circular motions. Rinse with warm water. If you have dry skin, try adding a drop or two of olive oil.

Shea butter, jojoba and other natural oils can be used as the base for moisturizers and skin creams. You can find more recipes for homemade skin care and beauty products at treehuger.com and natural-skin-care-info.com for more recipes for homemade skin care and beauty products.
