Healthy Bones the Wise Woman Way

Submitted by Marsha Newsom on Sun, 01/24/2010 - 23:43

Another health concern facing middle aged women is bone health. Bombarded by terms like “bone density”, and “osteoporosis”, women are faced with choices of hormones, prescription drugs or supplements to avoid hunch backs, broken bones, wheelchairs or worse.

The Wise Woman, according to author and nutritionist Susan S. Weed, makes simple life choices to preserve bones and prevent breaks.1 These choices include exercise, nourishment, herbal infusions, herbal vinegars and yogurt.

Flexibility

Flexible bones bend. Stiff bones break. It's that simple. To make your bones more flexible, nourish them and strengthen and tone the muscles that support bones. Weed suggests yoga, tai chi, or any strengthening, opening, flexibility-building discipline.

Nourishment

Bones need high quality proteins, fats and minerals. To get the optimum benefit from the minerals in fruits and vegetables, she advises that you cook them until there is a noticeable change in color and texture.

Herbal Infusions

Herbs are a powerful source of high quality minerals. To make an herbal infusion, pour a quart of water over an ounce of dried herbs (such as oatstraw, red clover or comfrey leaves) and let steep overnight. In the morning strain the liquid and serve hot or cold, with honey or milk, or mixed with black or green tea.

Yogurt

Yogurt is an important source of fat, protein and calcium one of the most important mineral for bones.

Using these methods, you can insure or regain your bone health and avoid the risks and expenses of prescription medication.
