What Is Baby Colic?

Submitted by Courtney on Mon, 02/01/2010 - 00:26

Though many are not exactly sure what this “colic” thing is, most of us are aware that it something that is unpleasant and undesirable in relation to babies. Colic is a term that is commonly used to describe an incredibly upset, irreconcilable child who is in this state for a considerable amount of time. What actually causes colic in a child, however, is not very well known.

What Causes Colic?

Initially, trapped gas was to blame for a child’s colic. Even adults know how awful the stabbing pain of trapped gas can be. Though there is no concrete evidence that this is the sole cause for infant colic, there is evidence that lends itself to the thought that gas can play a part in producing colic.

Another explanation for colic is something referred to as our “gut flora” (naturally occurring in our bodies), which essentially means a probiotic must be given to a colicky baby to improve the pain and discomfort associated with their lactose intolerance, gastric inflammation, and necrotizing entercolitis.

Some doctors still think that colic arises mostly due to a baby’s temperament. If a child has a sensitive nature, is unhappy with his or her environment and has an immature nervous system which causes him or her to cry with ease, then he or she must have colic.

Here’s another explanation still which was true in the case of my niece: my niece had acid reflux as an infant, which made her downright miserable during most of the day – especially during nap times or any time where she was laid right on her back.

How to Help Your Baby with Colic

Because of the varying explanations as to why your child may be suffering from “colic”, the treatment options available to you may differ. The important thing for you as a parent is to keep your cool as much as possible, no matter how hard of a strain your colicky baby puts you under. Take a deep breath and take a step away, and remember to continue to take care of yourself too. A frustrated parent is no good when it comes to soothing a frustrated baby (talk about oil and water!). Every hour, remember to:

  • Take 5 to 10 minutes of “you” time every hour, even if that means you’re standing on your apartment room balcony listening to the muffled cries of your child. At least the cries aren’t going straight to your ear drum
  • Eat and drink. Never forget to eat and drink when you need to so that you can help keep your energy and spirits high.
  • Ask for help! If you feel yourself on the verge of a complete break down, ask a friend, family member or even hire a babysitter to help you with your child. You’d be amazed how great even being able to go grocery shopping by yourself is for your mental well being.
  • Have a sense of humor; and
  • Remember that what you are experiencing, right now, will not last forever. Colic will not go on forever and will be over sooner than you may know it. Breath, laugh, and perhaps invest in some good quality ear plugs.
