I Learned Everything I Need To Know About Business From Childbirth

Submitted by Marsha Newsom on Sun, 02/21/2010 - 01:57

Are you a Mom thinking about going into business? Well there is good news for you. Although the odds are stacked against business owners, as a Mom, your kids have already put you through business book camp. And you didn't even know you were in training!

Make Goals

One of the first things you will hear about business is that it is more work than you thought it was going to be. Whoever said that never had to keep a toddler occupied in a waiting room. Like child rearing, business works best when you plan in advance. Make a goal and then plan how you will reach it. Expect the unexpected.

What to Expect

Along those lines, be prepared for a lot of work up front and a long wait for the prize at the end. But what does that sound like? With the right plan and a good attitude, you can have fun along the way.

Mistakes are Part of the Process

Even with the right plan and a great attitude, you are going to look stupid at least once along the journey. There aren't many guarantees in business. But the one guarantee is things are not going to go as planned. And you will make some mistakes. Remember what you tell your children about mistakes, and be sure to learn from your own. You might have to learn to eat a little crow along the way.

Be Positive

Stay away from nay sayers. Your positive attitude will go alone way in your path to success. This is the message you teach your children. Remember it yourself. There are enough real obstacles to tackle. Friends, colleagues, even family members who are negative about your business add an unnecessary layer of challenges. Surround yourself with supportive, positive people.

Keep Going

Don't give up, because when you think you can't go on, things will start to get better. Business is like labor in that there is a transition period. You take your knocks, face all the crises, and when you are ready to throw in the towel, things start to turn in the right direction. And you certainly don't want to waste all of the effort you put in, when success is just around the corner.
