In the News: Teens For Safe Cosmetics Coalition

Submitted by Marsha Newsom on Sat, 02/20/2010 - 14:48

Teen aged girls represent a big market for cosmetics companies. They use a lot makeup. And they are often customers for life. However that will change if a group of health conscious teen girls has there say about it. “Teens for Safe Cosmetics” is a coalition of passionate young women who are trying to educate their peers about the health risks that are linked to cosmetics and personal care products. Many of the ingredients in cosmetics, including mercury and lead, are linked to cancer and other serious illnesses.

Teens for Safe Cosmetics is an offshoot of the Marin (CA) Cancer Project, begun in 2002 by Judi Shils. When Shils learned that cancer rates in her county had risen 60% in eight years, she established Search for the Cause. Teens for Safe Cosmetics has expanded into a national organization, with chapters from coast to coast.

Making Items More Safe

In recent years, the group has had significant impact on legislation in California. Teen campaign members played a key role in the last hour lobbying effort that culminated in the passage of SB484, The California Safe Cosmetics Act in October of 2005. The bill was to ban phthalates from children’s toys and baby nipples. They also spoke at a hearing lead by Senator Carole Migden in San Francisco fight for laws in support of Nail Salon Workers and in 2008, at a hearing to ban lead in lipstick.

The teens use the considerable power of their buying dollars to support companies that are environmentally responsible.
