My primary is wanting me to take the tetanus and whopping cough shot and I don't know if this is safe can someone advise?

Please read up on this issue. The idea that "vaccines are dangerous because of mercury" has been reduced to urban myth. The journal that originally published the study that started the fearmongering withdrew the study because it was not a good study.

By not getting vaccinated you are endangering others as well as yourself.
