Broccoli to the rescue

broccoli

Scientists have discovered the apparent cancer fighting component of broccoli. Apparently there is a biochemical basis for the healing ability of broccoli and vegetables like it. For the first time, researchers have found that certain substances in the vegetables target and block a defective gene associated with cancer.

The report could lead to new strategies for preventing and treating cancer. Fung Lung Chung and colleagues found that substances called isothiocyanates, ITCs, which are found in broccoli, cauliflower, watercress and other cruciferous vegetables seem to stop the growth of cancer. Their findings are published in Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Until now, no one knew how these substances worked. There is a tumor suppressor gene called p53 which appears to keep cells healthy and prevents them from starting the abnormal growth that kick starts cancer. When mutated, p53 no longer works. ITCs might work by targeting this gene and keeping it effective.

The researchers watched how certain naturally occurring ITCs worked on a variety of cancer cells. The types of cancer cells they looked at were lung, breast and colon cancer, some of the more widespread and devastating types. They found that ITCs worked to eliminate the defective p53 cells while leaving the healthy ones alone. Drugs based on this information could work to improve a person's chances of preventing cancer or treating existing cancer.

More research is needed, but this could be a big development in new cancer treating strategies.
