Fun birth statistics released for 2009

American births by teenagers were down to 39.1 births per 1000 in 2009. This a record low since data began to be collected on teenage deliveries. The prior year recorded 42.5% births per 1000 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And in some really good news, the low numbers spanned all ethnic groups.

The numbers from the CDC are exceptionally accurate, culling actual birth record data from all fifty states. They reported that overall fertility rates have dropped as well. For women between the ages of 15 and 44 years, births have dropped from 68.6 per 1000 in 2008 to 66.7 per 1000 in 2009. They do not attempt to explain the drop in birth numbers.

A total of 4,247,694 babies were born in America in 2008. In 2009 the number dropped to 4,131,019. It seems like a downward trend in all categories. The report also notes the first drop in unwed mothers since 1997. There was also a 7% drop in birth weight for mothers in the early 20s. Preterm births also dropped to 12.2%, the third consecutive year with lowered numbers.

The obvious uptick was for Cesarean births: at an all time high of 32.9%.
