State chills the relaxation brownie

nap time brownie

Relax dude, it’s just a brownie. Loaded with melatonin. Like 25 times the prescribed adult dosage. Which is why several children have been hospitalized after eating them.

No wonder two towns in Massachusetts have banned the brownie. This little delight, called Lazy Cakes, is generally available from $3-$5 at food stores and night clubs. That alone should have made it a questionable food product.

Melatonin is a hormone. It is produced naturally by the body and used commercially as a sleep aid. It is considered a dietary supplement and not a drug which means it is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. An adult dosage in a child would mimic the effects of Valium.

The products are not sold only in Massachusetts. Recently there was a case in Arizona where a two year old child had a few bites of a Lazy Cake and dropped into a deep sleep. He was hospitalized.

The ban in the towns in Massachusetts is driven primarily by the products attractiveness to children. The packaging and marketing seem to be geared toward juvenile appeal. There is some support for a statewide ban.

Not just this product but melatonin itself is on the radar as a potentially problematic product. National poison control centers receive more calls about melatonin than any other herbal supplement, reported William Flanagan, mayor of Fall River, MA, in a press conference last week when he announced the product ban.

The mayors of two towns in

The mayors of two towns in New England are taking a stand against the plague currently decimating the land, that of melatonin brownies. Melatonin is not a craze inducing narcotic, but a hormone that is naturally produced by the brain that makes people drowsy. The concern is over a manufacturer who makes melatonin-laced desserts.
