Allergies and all natural treatments

Yesterday I wrote about some simple dietary changes which can help with seasonal allergies. Since allergies are in full swing with spring, there are also some supplemental herbal treatments which act as antihistamines.

Some studies suggest that Lactobacillus acidophilus strain L-92, a probiotic often added to yogurt may help with atopic dermatitis or itchy skin. This can also be bought in a pill or powder form and is usually found in the refrigerated section of the store. Also try light olive oil or pure almond oil after showering to prevent symptoms from dry skin.

The herb butterbur has been shown to help with hay fever symptoms. Swiss researchers found that one tablet, four times a day was as effective as an over the counter drug without side effects.

Also, think about eliminating products from your diet to get some relief. Dairy products for instance are known to cause all kinds of problems which can be exacerbated by allergies. Mild congestion caused by dairy could become intolerable when combined with seasonal stuffy nose.

“You have to really look at your diet and cut out any foods that seem to provoke even a mild sensitivity, such a occasional hives or even stomach upset,” says Mary Hardy, MD, director of integrative medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
