Is Your Child Allergic to Christmas?
Congestion, wheezing, coughing and sneezing are definitely not on your child’s wish list — but somehow, they always seem to be delivered just in time for Christmas. Holiday decorating can be a huge challenge if your child suffers from respiratory allergies. The good news is that you can deck the halls and still avoid allergy triggers this Christmas.

Cope with Poison Ivy
Poison ivy, western poison oak and poison sumac all have an oil in their leaves, vines and roots called urushiol. The oil is released when the plant is bruised. The oil is still active even in dead plants. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 85 percent of people are sensitive to the oil. Usually within 15 minutes of contact, the urushiol binds to skin proteins.

Magic Ways to Make It Better

All mommies everywhere kiss owies to make them better, but I've learned a few other fun ways to make things better. My friend Trevi taught me about throwing owies in the street. When her daughter Simone was hurt or sad, she would scoop up the imaginary owie and dramatically fling it toward the window. She'd shout at it and make a grand scene of chastising it. It worked every time.

TV and Your Toddler’s Attention Span

But you won't see an outcry from the mass media giants in this country. You see, we live in the country where "Why TV is Good for Kids" appeared as the cover story in Newsweek Magazine in 2002 — the same Newsweek Magazine that's owned by the Washington Post Company, which owns a sprawling cable company and six broadcast stations around the country.
No, you won't hear too much about these important studies from the Time-Warners of the world. Bad for business, you see. But if you're the parent of a young child, it's much more than that. It's the possibility of permanently affecting your child's health.

Why You Should Go No ‘Poo

Almost three months ago, I was introduced to the idea of no longer using shampoo. I was intrigued. After looking into it somewhat, I figured I didn’t have anything to lose. So I picked up some baking soda and apple cider vinegar and then took the plunge. I love the results! There was an adjustment period where I had to play around with the measurements a bit but I finally got the hang of it. I have straight-as-a-board, baby-fine hair that has never held a “do.” After “no ‘poo,” I don’t even have to use styling products. I just blow dry and go; my hair now keeps any style. It’s awesome!

Are violent movies, video games, and television programs harmful to my child’s education?

The answer is “yes” — experts agree that violent media is harmful to children and their education. Education is the act of acquiring knowledge; therefore, any activity that impedes this knowledge acquisition is undesirable and problematic. There are many factors that contribute to a child’s education, but popular media such as movies, video games and television are profoundly influential because statistics show that the average child spends more time in these activities above all other activities except for sleep.

I was doing a yoga video the other day, and my 8-year-old wanted to do it with me.

I think it would be great for her to get some exercise. Is it safe for children to practice yoga? Karen Prior replies: Absolutely! Yoga is great for kids. When parents call me on the phone and ask how to get their kids into yoga, I tell the parents that the first thing they need to do is to practice yoga themselves. We have to lead by example in getting our kids to follow a healthier lifestyle. It sounds like you moving in the right direction.

Yoga for Kids and Parents

“Baby yoga! Baby yoga!” This is my daughter’s chant any time she reaches over to place her hands in front of her toes, in essence doing the toddler version of downward facing dog. I fantasized about doing yoga with my children before becoming pregnant, but I never pictured it like this.

Find Community Resources

In an ever-expanding global market, it's easy to forget that most of our needs can be met by using the resources we have access to in our own communities. As gasoline prices rise, which in turn tend to increase the price of every item transported, it's to our advantage as well as the environment to buy locally.

To Circumcise or Not to Circumcise

For some parents, circumcision has a deep religious significance; the procedure is central to establishing a newborn boy's identity. But for many other parents, the circumcision decision has become increasingly difficult. Traditionally, many parents turn to the medical profession for advice, but the American Academy of Pediatrics has made it clear that there is no right or wrong decision on the circumcision issue.

Coping With Colic

Colic is a common problem in infants and an even more frustrating condition for parents to deal with. Approximately 10 to 30 percent of all infants born have colic.

Early Infections = More Allergic Disease?

Previous studies have consistently shown that the likelihood of allergic diseases decreases as the number of siblings increases. Why this is the case is not clear. Researchers evaluated whether having infectious disease early in life (in the first six months) would be related to lower rates of atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema associated with allergies) at 18 months.
